Questionnaire

General

This is a Republican primary race.  Do you promise, if elected, to abide by the RPT platform?  And if not, please enumerate what problems you have.

Yes

Do you support current RPT chair James Dickey in full and if not, what do you disagree with?

Yes

Did you support liberal Texas house-speaker Joe Straus?  Why or why not?

No we deserve conservative leadership representing the party base with timely, effective legislation.

Please describe what you believe are the most significant issues in this race, why and what you'll do to address them?

I wish to serve my community.  Given other efforts and charitable endeavors, participating in key, county wide decisions is also a significant priority.  The intent is to show up, learn more and ensure prudent decisions are made.

Which supreme court cases should Texas just ignore?

Texas should at least conduct a cursory review of all Supreme Court cases for impact on the state.  Failure to do so would likely cost Texas more over time than a reasonable, efficient review process.

There's discussion about making major revisions to the RPT Platform. Please describe the nature of any major changes you support.

More needs to be learned in this area.

As a Republican, if you had to give up one of the following core principles, which one would you select first and why?
a. pro-life;
b. 10% reduction in state, fed, local spending;
c. 2nd amendment;
d. illegal immigration;
e. foreign bases;
f.  10th amendment

I see little need to give on any of these items.  If forced to choose, it seems pro life issues and advocacy are likely most efficiently addressed on a case by case basis with the utmost of dignity and humanity by private, predominately faith based organizations.  It seems on this type moral issue federal judges will slow or simply stop progress.  So, independent organizations, calls to action, approaches are likely to have the most positive impact and be most effective.

For what offices should term limits be implemented?

All

What distinguishes you from your opponent?

My intent in any new endeavor is to perform tasks as efficiently as possible and look for ways to improve.  If improvements can't be made or results enhanced in some way, my bias is to move on to other endeavors.  For instance, upon joining the Montgomery County Crime Stoppers Board, I served as a key leader raising what will soon be up to a quarter of a million dollars in grant money to buy key crime fighting items for our police, ISD, sheriff and public safety departments within Montgomery County.

Please list 3 federal agencies that are popular in our culture and should be abolished

Energy, Education and the IRS could likley be eliminated with intelligent legislation. Any necessary functions remaining and deemed necessary could be moved to other federal departments or back to the states.

Are the United States and Texas constitutions living documents?  Please answer in the context of Progressivism versus Originalism.

The original intent of these documents are not that hard to understand and should survive any progressive attempt to revise.

Taxes

What form of federal tax law do you support and why (e.g., current, flat tax, fair tax, other)?

Flat tax.  The latest tax bill passed fails to eliminate estate and alternative minimum taxes, sadly maintains some poorly conceived deductions and has a 7 tier, progressive structure.  I doubt that's what Montgomery County Republicans typically believe to be good policy.  So, more work needs to be done with follow on legislation as tax revenues accrue from growth.  The bill is valuable for its corporate tax deductions; however, is not where we need to be to reward and encourage value creators.

2nd Amendment - guns

Do you believe the Second Amendment grants an individual right or a militia right?

Individual right

10th Amendment

Please explain your interpretation of the Tenth Amendment and the principle of nullification. Do states have a right of nullification? What should the federal government do if a state attempts nullification?

I need to learn more in this area.  As I read it, Texas has the right to do what it wishes unless the rights were specifically delegated to the federal government by Texas or the States.  So, it has the right to take whatever actions it deems necessary unless in some way it agreed to subjugate these rights since the Bill of Rights was ratified.  The legalities of how to cause any desired nullification seem to be the issue to me, not the right to take an action including nullification.

Other civil liberty

At what point should the "right to life" or "personhood" be granted to new human beings (e.g., at conception, 13 weeks of gestation, birth, 5 days old, 18 years old, etc)? What action, if any, will you take to reflect this in law?

Conception

Do you support or oppose federal funding for Planned Parenthood and other agencies that perform abortions, both in the U.S. and abroad (even if they use money derived from other sources)?

Oppose

Education

Do you support or oppose allowing parents direct the flow of federal education funds (e.g., to their school or home school of choice)? Support? Oppose? Please explain.

Support

Immigration

What, if anything, should be done to protect our borders from illegal immigration?

I believe we have the right to know who is in our country and should rigorously enforce our borders.  By some estimates, there are a billion emigrees trying to better their lives by moving from lesser privileged to more privileged areas of the world.  Regardless of how kind we are, and we will be kind and support legal immigration to the extent that can be accomplished, the solution has to be a combination of many ideas.

It is too simplistic just to argue about whether or not we should build a wall.  More likely, it will be most effective to develop a more technical approach augmented by a better physical barrier, enhanced surveillance and appropriate staffing levels.  Implementation of the right, smart techonology will likely be key.  Finding ways though charitable or other means to encourage emigrees to grow crops, raise animals or otherwise make life more valuable at their points of origin should be most efficient and more successful than dealing with the problem at our borders or in emigree tent cities along migration paths.  I would support far more consideration and testing as we work to protect our borders more effectively emphasizing comprehensive approaches.

Transportation

Do you support or oppose the referendum passed by both the MoCo GOP Executive Committee and SREC to allow voters, at the statewide level, to decide in the voting booth whether or not they want a particular toll road?  Why or why not?

What does being a conservative mean to you?

Valuing the individual, the right to work, improve, learn and make one's life better.  Conservatives typically celebrate accomplishment and are prone to serve and do what is necessary to build a vibrant, stable community.
